Description:
The journey to COP30 in Belém, Brazil, with stops at CBD COP16 in Cali and UNFCCC COP29 in Baku, is critical for securing the financial support needed for global biodiversity and climate initiatives. At CBD COP16, discussions will push forward the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, aiming to mobilise at least $200 billion annually by 2030 to combat biodiversity loss. Meanwhile, COP29 in Baku will focus on setting a new climate finance target, establishing a baseline of $100 billion annually by 2025. The success of COP30 hinges on finalising Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and delivering the financial mechanisms to implement these plans.
This session will bring together key representatives from the upcoming presidencies of the Rio Conventions to align priorities, explore collaboration opportunities, and create a shared vision for COP30’s success in securing necessary funding for nature recovery by 2030.
Scientific evidence suggests that nature-based solutions could provide up to one-third of the emissions reductions needed to meet global climate goals. Yet, political and financial barriers continue to impede progress. With over half of the global economy dependent on natural resources—forests alone sustain 20% of livelihoods—our economic model must evolve to support a nature-positive economy that balances environmental recovery with sustainable development.
Forests and nature-based solutions present significant funding opportunities, delivering benefits for biodiversity, climate, and communities cost-effectively. Exploring innovative financial tools, such as REDD+, Brazil's socio-bioeconomy strategies, the Forest Forever Fund, and debt-for-nature swaps, is essential for attracting investment and ensuring that global biodiversity and climate targets are not just met but exceeded.
During New York Climate Week, this roundtable will spotlight the financial pathways leading to COP30, featuring high-level speakers from the upcoming COP Presidencies, government authorities and private sector leaders committed to tackling the climate and biodiversity crises whilst promoting
nature-positive economic outcomes. The hour-long discussion will underscore the urgent need for substantial financial commitments and innovative tools to support nature-related initiatives.
