About the programme

The UN-REDD Programme is the flagship UN knowledge and advisory partnership on forests and climate. We work to reduce forest emissions and enhance forest carbon stocks.

  • Our goal is to support countries to realize forest solutions to the climate emergency by reducing carbon emissions and fostering carbon sequestration for at least 5 GtCO2e per year.

  • To achieve this goal, we support countries to mobilize finance and advance the implementation of REDD+ and the Paris Agreement, focusing on Articles 4, 5 and 6.

  • Our advocacy for forest-based solutions targets carbon sequestration and champions non-carbon benefits. These include biodiversity conservation, enhancement of local livelihoods, advancement of gender equality, and the promotion of Indigenous Peoples’ (IP) rights.

  • Our work is deeply rooted in finding local solutions and prioritizes the rights and involvement of Indigenous Peoples, ensuring transparency and participation, in alignment with principles of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), and UNFCCC safeguards.

  • Our network spans over 65 partner countries, leveraging more than 15 years of experience and the combined knowledge and expertise of FAO, UNDP, and UNEP.

About - Hero

WHAT IS REDD+

REDD+ is a voluntary climate change mitigation  approach that has been developed by Parties to the  UNFCCC. It aims to incentivize developing countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation, conserve and enhance forest carbon stocks, and sustainably manage forests.

Strategy Hero

OUR STRATEGY

The UN-REDD Programme works towards four outcomes, guided by its 2021-2025 framework, to reduce forest emissions and enhance forest carbon stocks while contributing to national sustainable development.

Impact Hero

OUR IMPACT

More than 2 billion people, or 25% of the global population, depend on forests for their livelihoods. In one way or another, the  health of our forests directly or indirectly impacts everyone.

Governance Hero

GOVERNANCE

The UN-REDD Programme governance framework builds upon the practical experiences acquired by the Programme since 2008, from internal reviews, to external and independent audits and evaluations.
