Half-day knowledge exchange and dialogue on forest action and climate ambition in Asia
About
Ramping up forest action is crucial to strengthen NDC goals and combat climate change effectively. Forests play a vital role in carbon sequestration, yet current NDC commitments from key countries are insufficient to meet the global 2030 goal of halting and reversing deforestation. While some countries have set targets for forest restoration, these efforts fall short without addressing the broader issue of deforestation, a major source of carbon emissions. Enhanced ambition and immediate, robust actions, supported by significant financial investments, are necessary to achieve meaningful progress.
This knowledge exchange and dialogue session aims to provide UNFCCC NDC focal points and country advisors in the AFOLU sector with the expertise needed to elevate NDC ambitions by setting specific, measurable forest targets and accessing diverse financial mechanisms. By building on key reports and guidance documents, such as the UN-REDD report on raising ambition and the learning journals on forest carbon markets and REDD+ under the UNFCCC framework, the workshop seeks to accelerate NDC implementation. This half-day workshop, held alongside the regional UNFCCC NDC forum in Bangkok taking place on 30 September to 2 October, will further ensure alignment with broader efforts to craft ambitious and implementable NDCs, ultimately driving significant climate action.
Objectives
- Facilitate political dialogues to address the challenges of establishing realistic and measurable forest targets within NDCs, promoting enhanced cooperation across countries and sectors.
- Gain and share knowledge on financial innovation, including international climate finance, debt-for-nature swaps, Article 6, and market-based approaches, to effectively accelerate the implementation of NDCs.
