Commitment Period

Definition

The period of time in a regulatory greenhouse gas mitigation scheme during which countries are required to reduce emissions by a specific amount. The five-year Kyoto Protocol Commitment Period is scheduled to run from calendar year 2008 to calendar year-end 2012 ("First Commitment Period").

Alternative definition

If emissions from harvesting during a commitment period are counted, then during the first and subsequent commitment periods a net debit could arise from a managed forest estate that is approximately in carbon balance.
