The celebrations of this year’s International Day of Forests under the theme ‘forest restoration – a path to recovery and well-being' remind us of forests’ remarkable health benefits, crucial for our life on this planet – as providers of fresh air, nutritious foods, clean water, sources of medicine and shields against zoonotic diseases.
As the Covid-19 crisis affects the entire world, Indigenous Peoples are already confronting manifold crises: deforestation by land and agri-business ventures in their territories, persistent lack of tenure rights, economic marginalization, and poor public services for education and healthcare.

GREEN GIGATON CHALLENGE LAUNCHED TO ACHIEVE ONE GIGATON OF EMISSION REDUCTIONS FROM AVOIDED DEFORESTATION BY 2025
London, 19 November 2020 - Emergent and the United Nations REDD Programme (UN-REDD) - supported by the Environmental Defense Fund, Forest Trends and the Architecture for REDD+ Transactions - launched today at the London Climate Action Week the Green Gigaton Challenge, a global initiative to catalyse funding for one gigaton of high-quality emissions reductions a year from forests by 2025.
