Addressing and respecting safeguards is a fundamental element of all phases of REDD+. In the current landscape of climate finance where the need to demonstrate high integrity of emissions reductions has been highlighted, the application of safeguards has been brought to the front as an essential component of this integrity. The climate finance environment for REDD+ continues to evolve. In addition to UNFCCC safeguards requirements, a growing number of initiatives and funders have their own requirements.

This webinar was for government’s REDD+ focal points and REDD+ safeguards specialists, key donors, current or potential partners of UN-REDD, as well as experts, academics and practitioners that provide technical assistance for the implementation of the Warsaw Framework for REDD+, with a focus on safeguards.

During the webinar we heard about the key safeguards requirements of ART/TREES, Verra, and LEAF. A discussion was promoted on how existing safeguards approaches, tools, and processes developed in line with the UNFCCC guidance can be harmonized with and used to address multiple safeguards requirements over the different phases of REDD+.
