At the international level, the UN-REDD Programme seeks to build consensus and knowledge about REDD+ and raise awareness about the importance of including a REDD+ mechanism in a post-2012 climate change agreement. It also provides opportunities for dialogue between governments, civil society organizations and technical experts, to ensure that REDD+ efforts are based on science and take into account the views and needs of all stakeholders.
The Global Programme develops common approaches, analyses, methodologies, tools, data and guidlines that facilitates countries in their REDD+ Readiness work. The work is in many cases not country specific so that countries that are not benefiting from a UN-REDD National Programme still can benefit from the information.
The Global Programme work is divided in the following seven work areas:
- Measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) and monitoring
- Engagement of Indigenous Peoples, civil society and other stakeholders
- Multiple benefits
- Knowledge management, coordination and communication
- National REDD+ governance
- Equitable benefit sharing systems
- Low-carbon sector transformation
