Report from the Tanzania side event on REDD

Copenhagen, 8 December: The Government of Tanzania, in partnership with universities and local civil society, facilitated by Kilimanyika, showcased some key elements of Tanzania‘s REDD Readiness process in Copenhagen.

Through high quality presentations by various experts, this event provided the opportunity to update an audience of sixty stakeholders about:   

• The challenges and opportunities in developing Tanzania’s National REDD Strategy
• How participatory forest management is underpinning REDD in Tanzania and its social, biophysical and economic outcomes and governance challenges
• New methods and approaches in National Forest Monitoring and Assessment:
• How participatory forest carbon monitoring and reporting by local people is doable (beginning with hand held computers or GPS), cost efficient (an estimated 0.5 euros per hectare) and viable, and has been experimented for five years in four villages with good environmental and social outcomes.
• Valuing the Arc: Empirical modelling of ecosystem scenarios for informing policy, with carbon stock modeling and mapping objectives
