Cambodia REDD+ Taskforce Secretariat Organizes Concert for REDD+

The concert which was held at Koh Pich (Diamond Island), on 14 December 2013 aimed to increase awareness among the general public about REDD+.

Organized by the Cambodia REDD+ Taskforce Secretariat, sponsored by Smart, Cambodia’s leading mobile service provider, and supported by Coca Cola, it is estimated that around 6,000 people attended the concert, far exceeding the target of 2,000 people.

REDD+ Concert on "Our Forest, Green Planet" held at Koh Pich (Diamond Island), on 14 December 2013

The concert included a wide variety of acts, all of which featured a strong message on the importance of forest protection. The opening act featured a performance by the Tampuan indigenous peoples’ group from Rattanakiri, and they were followed by some of Cambodia’s leading entertainers.  Superstar Ouk Sokun Kanha electrified the audience, while unique rapper DJ Klaing ratcheted up the excitement with his amazing ad-lib raps on forest protection.  Comedy duo, the Perkmi Team, was also hugely popular with the audience, as were the final act, the CTN comedy troupe.

During the concert, awards were also handed out to the winners of a children’s drawing competition, which was held in November, on the subject of humans and forests.  Prizes were awarded in two age categories, 7-11 and 12-14 years old.  Many of the drawings were amazingly creative and of a high standard.

First prize winner, Sothea Arphirith, in the REDD+ drawing competition.

Before and during the concert, a Cambodia REDD+ Programme booth attracted large numbers of visitors who were able to play a game about animals that live in the Cambodian forests, admire the children’s drawings, and pick up informational material about REDD+ and forest protection in Cambodia.

The concert was such a success that plans are now underway to organize a concert road-tour to all of the main forested provinces in Cambodia.  More information and photos of the concert can be found on the Cambodia REDD+ Facebook page and on the Cambodia REDD+ website.
